ノートルダム大聖堂、焼失

2019年度のUnit.06のClose-Up Wordsは、 パリの名所、ノートルダム大聖堂 のニュースからです。 

パリの名所、ノートルダム大聖堂で、4月15日、大火災が発生しました。

A major fire has engulfed the medieval cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, one of France's most famous landmarks.

※大火災は、huge fire、massive fire、ferocious blaze、inferno、conflagration 等。

※動詞は、engulf（飲み込む）の他、devastate、ravage、sweep through 等。

※medieval =中世（風）の

※cathedral ＝大聖堂

※landmark =歴史的建物、保存建造物、画期的出来事

パリの上空を噴煙がうねりを上げました。

※plume =羽毛、ふさふさした羽毛を思わせるもの→煙突の煙、吹き降ろす雪

※billow ＝大波、うねるもの、渦巻くもの。動詞で大きくうねる

消防隊員が鎮火して＝ firefighters contained the blaze　　　

※消防隊＝ fire brigade

所蔵の美術品も救われました 。

しかし、尖塔と屋根が崩落しました。

The 850-year-old Gothic building's spire and roof have collapsed.

※spire =（塔の上の）尖塔、尖り屋根、steeple の先端部分

ヴィクトル・ユーゴーの1831年の小説 The Hunchback of Notre Dame 『ノートルダムのせむし男』（邦題は『ノートルダムの鐘』）で不滅となった＝ immortalize　鐘楼＝ bell tower / belfry は無事でした。1200年代からパリにそびえたち、二つの世界大戦も無事に生き延びたノートルダム大聖堂。

No other site represents France quite like Notre-Dame. Its main rival as a national symbol, the Eiffel Tower, is little more than a century old. Notre-Dame has stood tall above Paris since the 1200s. It survived two world wars largely unscathed.

パリの人々は、街の象徴、歴史の一部が消えてしまったと嘆きました。

Thousands of people gathered in the streets around the cathedral, observing the flames in silence. Some could be seen openly weeping, while others sang hymns or said prayers.

“It’s our heritage. Part of our history is going up in smoke.”

崩れていく瞬間は、声にならない喘ぎがあがりました。

There were gasps from the crowd at the moment Notre-Dame’s spire fell.

マクロン仏大統領が呼び掛けた再建への寄付に応じて、「グッチ」のオーナーが１億ユーロを寄付すると表明すると、数時間後に、ライバル企業の仏ＬＶＭＨモエヘネシー・ルイヴィトンのアルノー一族は２億ユーロの寄付金を表明。

Not to be outdone, Bernard Arnault, France’s wealthiest scion, upped the ante with a 200-million-euro a few hours later.

The spectacle of billionaires trying to one-up one another quickly intensified resentments over inequality that have flared during the Yellow Vest movement.　

（試訳：互いに一歩先に出ようとする億万長者の寄付合戦は、イエローベスト運動の時に、不平等について沸き起こった憤りをまたあっと間に激化させた。）

※spectacle =①目立つ光景、見もの、不快な光景、大掛かりのショー

※one-up =動詞：～より一歩先に出る、リードする、差をつける

※resentment =憤り、立腹、憤慨、恨み

放火＝ arson などではなく、"accidental destruction by fire"とされていますが、改修工事＝ renovation works のための屋根に取り付けられた足場内からの出火で、The fire broke out in the roof space which was surrounded by the scaffolding. ＝（建築現場等の）足場。現場から吸い殻＝ a cigarette butt / stub / end が見つかり、フランス当局が捜査を続いています。
