センターリスニングの四天王

大学入試センター試験のリスニングは、gauge students’ English comprehension abilities ＝ 英語の理解度を図るためのテストですが、今年の選択肢方式の問題＝ multiple-choice question のイラストがユニーク過ぎると、ネット上で受験生の話題を集めています。

センター試験は、正式な英訳語は National Center Test for University Admissions ですが、日本独特の試験なので a standardized examination called the Center Test  と、少し説明を加えると伝わりやすいでしょう。

流れてくる会話を聞いて、当該のイラストを一つ選びます。

The very first question in the listening section featured a conversation  between two people, with the dialogue as follows:

Person A: “We need an idea for a new cartoon character.”

Person B: “I agree. How about a vegetable?”

Person A: “That sounds OK. But, for a stronger impact, give it wings to fly.”

Person B: “Good idea.”

答えは、 vegetable で wing が付いているBですね。この bizarre illustrations of anthropomorphized fruits and vegetables （擬人化された果物と野菜の一風変わったイラスト）のインパクトが強く、これらのキャラのタッチを変えたイラストや3D化などの二次創作が盛り上がりをみせています。

語源は anthropo が「人、人類に関する」　＋ morph「形態、形を変える」です。anthropology は人類学ですね。

記事のタイトルは Bizarre English test in Japan asks students about winged vegetables, launches new meme となっていました。

meme とは、人類の文化を進化させる、人から人へコピーされる様々な情報を意味する科学用語です。

二次創作だと、fan fiction（原作者以外のfanが作るフィクション創造物）　略して fanfic という語もあります。

今では、センターリスニングの四天王 “The Four Heavenly Kings of Center Listening” というユニット名までついているようです。受験の緊張を和らげてくれる話題でした。
