GoToトラベルキャンペーンがスタート

議論のあるGoToトラベルキャンペーンがスタートしました。

The controversial Go To Travel campaign kicked off amid growing concerns about  whether it will lead to increased coronavirus infections and mounting criticism over the government’s handling of its rollout.

※controversial=議論の的となる、議論を呼ぶ

※kick off=開始する、はじめる

※rollout=新型飛行機の初公開、新事業の開始

GoToトラベルキャンペーンは、the troubled government-backed travel discount programなどと説明されていました。キャンペーン名ですので和製英語もOKですが、正確な英語ではgo toの後に目的地が来ます。ex) go to Okinawa『旅行する』はtravel/go on a trip/take a tripというようにtripは名詞、travelは動詞で使うことが一般的です。

trip → 短い旅行、行って帰ってくること。 just made a trip to the post office.　郵便局に行ってきたところだ

travel → どこかからどこかに移動する（特に長距離）。　Light travels faster than sound.　光は音よりも速く進む

どん底にある旅行業界the industry is hitting rock bottomを救済し、経済を活性化させる政府の主力政策の一つです。

The initiative is one of the government's flagship policies to revitalize an economy hobbled by the coronavirus pandemic.

※initiative=独創力、主導権、イニシアチブ、〔問題を解決するための〕新規構想、戦略

※flagship=旗艦、〔商船の〕主要船〔旗艦に相当する〕最も重要なもの、〔企業の〕主力商品

※hobble【自動】足を引きずって歩く limp【他動】足を引きずらせるcripple ～の進行を妨害するhinder be hobbled by～で身動きが取れなくなる

※revitalize=再活性化する、復興させる　→rev up句動　〔エンジンの〕回転数を上げる、活性化する

The ¥1.35 trillion campaign was originally designed to promote domestic travel by anyone to any destination they wished with an up to a 50 percent discount via deals and vouchers issued from September.

※voucher=クーポン　couponもOK

最大で半額の補助が出るという垂涎ものですが、感染の可能性を考えて反対意見も多いです。

Although some of the deals look mouthwatering, the reaction on social media hasn’t been great, with plenty of pushback coming from residents of regions that are located far from major metropolitan areas who are worried about the increased possibility of inbound infections.

※mouthwatering よだれの出そうな、食欲をそそる、おいしそうな、喉から手が出るほど欲しい、誘うような

感染者が上昇する中での強行に、地方のリーダーは再検討を求める声もあります。

Questions were growing as to how and why Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government went ahead with the campaign  despite the recent uptick in coronavirus cases and local leaders’ calls to rethink the plan.　

※go ahead with～＝（反対があっても）～を推し進める

※uptick=増加、上昇、上向き →spike/surgeもOK

結局土壇場で東京が除外＝exclude/bar/cut the capital out/exclusionされることに。平均収入の高い東京人＝Tokyoiteが抜ける影響は避けられないと思われます。政府と東京都の間の溝も深まったようです。

For travel destinations in other prefectures, this is likely to be a negative factor, too, since Tokyoites have the highest average income.

With the exclusion of Tokyo, the gulf between the prime minister's office and the Tokyo metro government has widened further.
